A little tap.
A way back.
Hold the phone close, then tap the notification that comes up. NFC is the same short-range chip already in your phone. No app, no bluetooth pairing, no signal. Just proximity.

Unlock your phone. Hold it close to the tag's tap circle and pause.
Tap to open
Wait for a notification on your screen, then tap the notification to open it. The tag does not open anything by itself.
Read and connect
A text opens. Read what is there, then send the message if you still need help. Nothing gets installed and nothing is downloaded.
Nothing happened? Move the phone slightly. On Android, turn NFC on in Settings. Try again without a thick or metal case.
Screens shown are illustrations; what happens varies by phone and by how the tag was set up. Sending a text needs phone service. In an emergency, call 911 first.

Hey, I’m Steven. I’m a dad in Grand Haven, and like every other parent around here I spend a fair amount of time thinking about where my kids are and who they are with.
South Pier Co. started with my daughter. We had just moved back home. New school, new team. Two ordinary things kept coming back to me.
She is going to leave that bag somewhere. That is not a maybe, that is a Tuesday.
If something serious happens, somebody calls 911 first. The tag is not a panic button and never will be. It is for everything either side of that: the bag left on the bus, the ride that never showed, the grown-up standing there who just needs to reach a guardian and has no way to.
So I made her a tag. Then it occurred to me that every other parent in those bleachers has the same two thoughts.
I spent twenty years in the Navy before this, and I am still in school, finishing an MS-MSL at Michigan State. Go Green. But I build the work around my family now rather than the other way around, and this is part of that. I design, print, finish and program every tag myself, here in Grand Haven. That is also why there is no account to make, nothing to subscribe to and nobody else’s server involved. It’s me.
